General SMP Questions

The basics โ€” what SMP is, how it works, and what to expect

10 Q&As

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

+

Scalp Micropigmentation โ€” also called a hair tattoo โ€” is a cosmetic procedure that uses microneedles to deposit pigment into the upper layer of the scalp, replicating the appearance of tiny hair follicles. It creates the look of a full, close-shaved head of hair or adds density to thinning hair.

It is not a traditional tattoo. Different machines, needles, pigments, and techniques are used โ€” and the pigment is placed much shallower, making the result look completely natural and preventing the colour from ever turning blue or bleeding over time.

How long does scalp micropigmentation last?

+

SMP is a permanent hair loss solution โ€” it never fully disappears. Most clients come back every 3โ€“5 years for a single touch-up session to refresh the colour, which is all that's needed. Sun exposure is the main cause of fading, so wearing SPF on your scalp or a hat outdoors will significantly extend the life of your result.

Does SMP hurt?

+

Overall, SMP causes very mild discomfort โ€” most clients chat or read during the session. Some areas of the scalp are slightly more sensitive (the temples being most common), but nothing that most people find unbearable. A topical numbing cream is applied before each session. Michael regularly has clients who fall asleep during treatment.

What is the difference between SMP and a regular tattoo?

+

SMP is a completely different procedure to a regular tattoo:

  • Different needles โ€” micro needles that replicate the exact size of a hair follicle
  • Different depth โ€” SMP goes only 2 layers deep; tattoos go 5 layers deep
  • Different pigments โ€” plant-based SMP pigments fade naturally; tattoo ink can turn blue or green
  • Different technique โ€” SMP requires specialist training; it is its own discipline
  • Different result โ€” SMP looks like real hair follicles, not a painted-on design

How many sessions will I need?

+

Most clients need 2โ€“3 sessions spaced 7โ€“10 days apart. Each session builds on the last:

  • Session 1 โ€” Base layer applied. You'll leave looking noticeably different
  • Session 2 โ€” Density built up, hairline refined under healed skin conditions
  • Session 3 โ€” Final perfection pass (if needed)

Some clients return for a 4th session for additional touch-ups and healed photos. You will see a visible difference from your very first appointment.

Does SMP damage hair follicles?

+

No. The needle only reaches the upper dermis โ€” well above the hair follicle, which sits much deeper in the scalp. SMP cannot damage your existing hair. In fact, it has been known to stimulate hair growth in some clients as a side effect of the microneedling process.

Will SMP look natural?

+

Yes โ€” when performed by a skilled and experienced artist like Michael. The pigment is colour-matched precisely to your natural hair tone and applied in patterns that replicate real follicles. Our clients regularly report that friends, partners, and even barbers have no idea they've had a procedure done. They just think their hair "grew back."

How popular is scalp micropigmentation?

+

SMP is the fastest-growing hair loss treatment in the world. The global SMP market is projected to grow 6.8% annually through 2030. In Australia, around 42% of men experience noticeable balding by age 50, driving enormous demand for effective, non-surgical solutions. At My Transformation, we have treated 500+ Perth clients since 2019.

What makes My Transformation different from other SMP clinics in Perth?

+

Several things set My Transformation apart:

  • Michael personally handles every consultation and every treatment โ€” you always deal with the same artist
  • Trained under 4 SMP masters including a master class
  • Travelled to Brazil to train under world-leading artist Renato Muramatsu
  • Exclusive 3D thread-by-thread technique โ€” the only practitioner trained in this in Australia
  • Pointillism SMP โ€” more density in fewer sessions
  • 12 months of aftercare included with every treatment
  • 5-star rating across 72 Google reviews

Can SMP be removed if I change my mind?

+

Yes. Because SMP pigment is placed shallower than a regular tattoo, it is significantly easier to remove. Laser removal typically takes only 1โ€“3 sessions compared to 10+ for traditional tattoos. That said, we invest enormous time in the design and consultation process to ensure you are 100% happy before we begin โ€” getting it right first time is always the goal.

Hair Tattoo โ€” For Men

Questions specific to male hair loss, baldness and receding hairlines

8 Q&As

Do you have to shave your head for SMP?

+

Not always โ€” it depends on your treatment. For full baldness or a complete buzz-cut look, shaving gives the most seamless result. For density treatments where you're keeping your hair, shaving is not required. Michael also offers the exclusive 3D thread-by-thread technique which allows clients to keep their hair slightly longer than a zero โ€” contact us for more info on this.

Can SMP fix a receding hairline?

+

Yes. Hairline restoration is one of the most popular SMP treatments for men. If your hairline has receded, we can recreate it at whatever position suits your face shape โ€” with a sharp, shaped, or naturally soft edge depending on your preference. If the recession is significant with thinning throughout, shaving to zero and adding a full hair tattoo is the best option. If it's just the hairline, we can simply reinstate it.

Can SMP cover a completely bald head?

+

Absolutely โ€” full scalp coverage for complete baldness is one of the most common treatments at My Transformation. We replicate the look of a freshly shaved head with a full density of follicle dots and a clean, natural hairline designed specifically for your face shape. Results are visible from session one and are 100% undetectable.

Can SMP cover hair transplant scars?

+

Yes. Both FUT (linear strip) scars and FUE (circular punch) scars can be effectively camouflaged with SMP. We use colour-matched pigment to blend the scarred areas seamlessly into the surrounding scalp, making them completely invisible โ€” even up close. This is a very common treatment for men who have had previous hair transplant surgery.

What hairline styles can I choose from?

+

Michael will design your ideal hairline during your consultation based on your face shape and what looks most natural for you. The three main styles are:

  • Sharp / Clean โ€” a precise, defined edge like a fresh shape-up
  • Shaped / Natural โ€” slightly rounded at the temples for a more natural look
  • Soft / Youthful โ€” the most natural-looking option with subtle micro-irregularities

Michael's signature is also the barber fade โ€” blending from lighter sides up to a darker, denser top โ€” which gives the most realistic result.

How is SMP different from a hair transplant?

+
CostSMP from $900 vs transplant $10kโ€“$20k
Results visibleSMP session one vs transplant 12โ€“18 months
SurgerySMP โ€” none vs transplant โ€” invasive
ScarringSMP โ€” zero vs transplant โ€” common
MaintenanceSMP touch-up every 4โ€“6 years vs transplant ongoing medication
Side effectsSMP โ€” none vs transplant โ€” shock loss risk

Can I still go to the barber after SMP?

+

Yes โ€” and many clients do. After a full head SMP, you simply maintain a shaved or very short head as you normally would. The SMP is completely undetectable to your barber. In fact, many of our clients report that their barber simply assumes their hair "grew back" โ€” not that they've had any procedure done.

What is the 3D thread-by-thread technique?

+

This is an advanced SMP technique that Michael trained in Brazil specifically to bring back to Perth โ€” and as far as he knows, he is the only practitioner in Australia trained in it. Rather than a traditional shaved-head look, the thread-by-thread method creates individual hair-strand impressions in 3D layers, allowing you to keep your hair slightly longer than a zero. This opens up SMP to men who want to retain some hair length while still covering thinning or bald areas. Contact us for more information โ€” consultations are free.

Hair Tattoo โ€” For Women

Questions about female hair loss, thinning hair and density treatment

8 Q&As

Does SMP work for women?

+

Absolutely. Women's SMP is one of the most popular treatments at My Transformation. Around 49% of Australian women experience some form of hair loss โ€” SMP is an effective, non-surgical solution regardless of the cause. Rather than a buzzcut effect, women's SMP adds pigment between existing hairs to create the illusion of density and thickness, without changing your hairstyle at all.

Do women need to shave their head for SMP?

+

No โ€” not at all. Women's SMP works with your existing hair. We add pigment between your hair strands to create the appearance of a fuller, denser head of hair. Your hair length and style remain completely unchanged. You simply look like you have more hair โ€” nobody would ever know otherwise.

What causes female hair loss?

+

The most common cause is female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), which affects around 49% of women in Australia. Other causes include:

  • Stress and trauma
  • Hormonal changes (menopause, childbirth, thyroid)
  • Medication side effects
  • Alopecia areata
  • Cancer treatment
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Hairstyles that pull on the scalp over time

SMP is effective regardless of the cause of hair loss. Your consultation will help us assess the best approach for your specific situation.

Can SMP work for women with long hair?

+

Yes โ€” SMP works very well for women with any hair length. The pigment is applied between your existing hairs, matching their colour exactly, to create the look of thicker, denser hair. Whether your hair is long, medium, or short โ€” the result looks completely natural because it blends seamlessly with what's already there. SMP will not damage any of your existing hair follicles.

How long does women's SMP take and how many sessions?

+

Sessions for women typically last 1โ€“4 hours depending on the area being treated. Most clients need 2โ€“3 sessions spaced 2โ€“3 weeks apart โ€” slightly longer spacing than for men to allow the layered pigment to blend naturally with existing hair. Results are visible from session one and build dramatically through each session.

Will people be able to tell I've had the treatment?

+

After the initial settling period (redness subsides within 48โ€“72 hours), your result will look completely natural. Close friends and family may notice that your hair looks fuller and thicker โ€” but they won't be able to identify why. They'll just think you found a great shampoo. Only people you choose to tell will know.

Can I colour my hair after SMP?

+

Yes โ€” but we recommend colouring and cutting your hair before beginning your SMP sessions, not after. This is because the scalp needs to remain dry for 5 days after each treatment. Once your sessions are complete and you've fully healed, you can colour your hair as normal. Michael will match the pigment to your hair colour at the time of treatment.

How long does women's SMP last?

+

Women's SMP typically lasts 3โ€“5 years before a touch-up is needed to refresh the colour. Longevity depends on sun exposure, skin type, and skincare routine. A touch-up is just one session โ€” it's quick, affordable, and restores the result completely. Between touch-ups, the treatment requires no maintenance whatsoever.

Beard Tattoo FAQs

Questions about beard micropigmentation for patchy or thin facial hair

8 Q&As

What is Beard Micropigmentation (BMP)?

+

Beard Micropigmentation โ€” also called a beard tattoo โ€” uses the same method as Scalp Micropigmentation to replicate the appearance of beard hair follicles. Organic pigments are carefully applied into the skin over 2 sessions to simulate full, even facial hair growth. The result looks like a naturally full, close-shaven beard โ€” even if you struggle to grow one naturally.

What problems can beard micropigmentation fix?

+

Beard micropigmentation is a very versatile treatment. It can:

  • Fill in patchy or uneven areas of the beard
  • Add overall density to a thin beard
  • Conceal scars within the beard area
  • Reshape or define the beard line
  • Create a full 5 o'clock shadow from scratch
  • Add volume to any beard length โ€” not just stubble

How long does beard micropigmentation last?

+

Results typically last 3โ€“5 years in Australia's sunny climate. Longevity depends on your skin type, skincare routine, and sun exposure โ€” oily skin and frequent outdoor activity can accelerate fading slightly. A single refresh session every 3โ€“5 years is all that's needed to restore the result to its original appearance, including adjusting for any grey that may have developed.

How many sessions does beard micropigmentation take?

+

Most clients need 2 sessions to complete their beard transformation, each lasting 1โ€“2 hours. Session one applies a lighter base layer. Session two builds depth and definition with a slightly darker tone once the first session has healed. The gradual approach ensures the most natural-looking result โ€” because with beard tattoos, less is more. We always want it to look like it grew there naturally.

Does beard micropigmentation work on a longer beard?

+

Yes. Beard micropigmentation adds the illusion of density regardless of how long your beard is. It won't create actual hair strands, but the pigment dots blend between your real hairs to make the beard look fuller and more even throughout. Whether you wear a close shave, a short beard, or a longer style โ€” the treatment adapts to what you have.

Does beard micropigmentation hurt?

+

Most clients find beard micropigmentation significantly more comfortable than a regular tattoo. The face can be slightly more sensitive than the scalp in some areas โ€” particularly around the lip line โ€” but most people find it very manageable. We advise clients to have eaten beforehand and to be in good health on the day of treatment.

Will the beard tattoo look real up close?

+

Yes โ€” when done by a skilled artist, beard micropigmentation is completely undetectable even at close range. Michael uses precise, custom colour-matched pigments to replicate the exact shade of your facial hair. Our clients regularly report that even people who see them every day just assume they've started "getting better edges" โ€” not that they've had a cosmetic procedure.

Is there downtime after a beard tattoo?

+

No downtime โ€” you can go straight back to work. There will be some redness that subsides within 24 hours. The dots may appear slightly bolder immediately after the session but soften significantly as the skin heals over the following days. Avoid heavy sweating and sun exposure for the first week, and keep the area clean and dry while it heals.

Aftercare & Healing

What to do โ€” and what to avoid โ€” after your sessions

7 Q&As

When can I wash my head after a hair tattoo?

+

After 5 days you can wash your scalp using warm water and a gentle shampoo. If you experience scalp dryness after showering, apply a moisturiser morning and evening until it resolves. Women should also note that hair cannot be washed for 5 days after every session.

How long does SMP take to heal?

+

Initial redness subsides within 24โ€“72 hours. The complete healing process takes about 7 days, though there will be slight variation depending on the individual. During this time the pigment will lighten slightly as the skin heals โ€” this is completely normal and expected. The final colour settles after 7โ€“10 days, which is why sessions are spaced this far apart.

Can I exercise after SMP?

+

Avoid heavy sweating for the first 5 days. Light activity is fine, but intense exercise, saunas, and steam rooms should be avoided during the healing period. After 7 days you can return to your full exercise routine without any restrictions.

Can I go in the sun after SMP?

+

Avoid direct sun exposure for the first week. After healing, you can go in the sun normally โ€” but we strongly recommend applying SPF to your scalp or wearing a hat when outdoors in Perth's strong sun. Sun exposure is the number one cause of SMP fading over time, so SPF protection will significantly extend the life of your result.

Can I swim after SMP?

+

Avoid swimming โ€” including pools, the ocean, and hot tubs โ€” for the first 7 days after each session. Chlorine and salt water can affect the pigment while it's healing. After a full week of healing, swimming is completely fine with no restrictions.

When can I shave my head after SMP?

+

We recommend waiting 10 days after each session before shaving. After that, you can shave as normal โ€” a regular razor or electric shaver is fine. Most clients using a full-head SMP maintain a very short shave to keep the natural look consistent.

What should I do if my scalp feels dry or itchy after SMP?

+

Some dryness and itching during healing is completely normal. Apply a light, fragrance-free moisturiser to the treated area morning and evening until it resolves. Do not scratch or pick at the scalp. Michael is always available between sessions to answer questions โ€” just reach out on 0451 149 482 if you're concerned.

Over a 10-year period, SMP (including touch-ups) costs a fraction of what a transplant costs โ€” with no surgery, no scarring, and no recovery time.
